Anybody who knows me will tell you that I am a huge fan of 2D play forming games. The last few years has seen a near resurgence in the genre, particularly on Nintendo consoles. So it was with great anticipation today that I started playing Rayman Origins and what a thoroughly boring game it is.

I’d heard nothing but praise for it, even that some rated it higher than both the fantastic Donkey Kong Country Returns and the two New Super Mario Bros. games. I can’t see why. Yes, it looks beautiful but it’s just so slow, tiresome and boring. Doesn’t help that Rayman himself is a completely unloveable character.

What a shame.
Cracked out the Nintendo 64 and firing up this beauty.
Rareware fact one: Diddy Kong Racing started out as a caveman-staring time-travel real time strategy game before becoming a Disney World-inspired fun racing game set in dinosaur times and then turned into a sequel to RC Pro-Am. When Rare showed the almost finished game to Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto suggested using Diddy Kong instead. From an RTS to a brilliant kart racing game in just fourteen months. Impressive.
Rareware fact two: Microsoft have completely destroyed what was in the late ’90s possibly the second best video game developing company (behind Nintendo EAD). Kinect Sports? “Xbox. Fuck off.”
Rareware fact three: “Timber, rawr…” is still cute as a button.
